During Lent, there are strict dietary restrictions in place.
Питательный календарь на Великий пост: какие продукты запрещены в это время.

On Monday, March 3, immediately after the conclusion of Maslenitsa, the Great Lent begins in preparation for the Resurrection of the Lord. This is the longest fasting period of the year, lasting 48 days. In 2025, it will end on April 19.

The Great Lent is a time when believers purify their body and soul in anticipation of the significant celebration – the Resurrection of Christ. During these days, there are certain restrictions: gossiping, lying, doing evil, thinking negatively, hurting others, and indulging in entertainment are prohibited. Instead, one should pray a lot, repent for sins, and attend church.

Food Calendar for Great Lent 2025

During the Great Lent, strict food restrictions are observed to prepare for Easter:

  • On the first day of Lent, known as Clean Monday, and on Great Friday, April 18, no food is allowed at all. Only water can be consumed. This is necessary to demonstrate love for God and to achieve spiritual purification.
  • Throughout the first week of Lent, from Tuesday to Friday, a dry fast is observed. These days are considered the most severe in terms of fasting. Cooked food is prohibited; only fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, unleavened bread, dried fruits, and unsweetened compotes are allowed. Oil cannot be added to food.
  • Saturdays and Sundays are “light” days in terms of fasting. On these days, dishes with oil are permitted, and on Sunday, one can even indulge in a little wine.
  • In the following weeks, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, dry fasting is again observed. Only fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds are allowed. Cooking is not permitted.
  • On Tuesdays and Thursdays, some restrictions are lifted. Hot dishes can be eaten, but without added oil. This can include various types of grains – buckwheat, bulgur, rice, pasta, vegetables, soups, and other fasting dishes.
  • On March 25 – Annunciation and April 13 – Palm Sunday, fish and wine are permissible.
  • During the last week of Lent, from Monday to Saturday, complete dry fasting is observed. This means that on Tuesday and Thursday, hot dishes are also not allowed. On Great Friday, food consumption is prohibited.
  • Throughout the Great Lent, meat, dairy products, eggs, and strong alcohol are entirely forbidden. Fish is also not allowed on most days.
