The leader of China, Xi Jinping, will disregard the invitation from newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump to his inauguration. The event will be attended by the Chinese ambassador to the States and his wife, as is customary.
This was reported by CBS News citing its own sources. Additional officials from Beijing may join the ambassador at Trump’s inauguration.
"Inauguration officials have appointed staff to manage the diplomatic protocol during the celebrations," the publication added.
Xi's invitation to Trump's inauguration, delivered outside official diplomatic channels, came as a surprise to both Beijing and U.S. allies. The Chinese side found Trump's invitation quite unexpected.
Moreover, Western diplomats were also taken aback by the decision to invite Xi, considering the differing views on China among Trump’s team members. According to officials, this could become a source of tension both within the newly elected president's administration and in geopolitical relations.
It is worth noting that, according to the U.S. State Department, no foreign leader has attended the ceremony of transferring power to a new American president since 1874. Traditionally, such events are attended by ambassadors and diplomats.
As reported by "Telegraph," Xi Jinping stated during a meeting with Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev that it is necessary to "promote a swift de-escalation of the situation in Ukraine". The Chinese leader added that one should not add fuel to the fire, as this could provoke escalation, which must be avoided.
