SubscribePlaintiffs claimed that Siri could be activated without the trigger phrase "Hey, Siri" and record conversations.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Oakland, concluded with a proposed settlement. This brings to a close a five-year case, although Apple has not admitted any wrongdoing. The company has consistently emphasized its commitment to privacy protection, with CEO Tim Cook referring to privacy as a "fundamental human right." The final decision on the approval of the settlement will be made by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White on February 14.
If the settlement is approved, iPhone and other Apple device owners who have used Siri since September 2014 will be able to file claims. Compensation will amount to up to $20 per device, but no more than five gadgets. The total amount will depend on the number of claims submitted. It is expected that only 3-5% of users will file claims.
