The Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God is one of the most significant Christian holidays, celebrated by Eastern rite believers in Ukraine.
It is the day when the Archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would become the mother of Jesus Christ – the Savior of the world, writes Zn.ua.
In 2023, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine transitioned to the New Julian calendar, resulting in changes to the dates of many fixed Orthodox holidays. They are now celebrated 13 days earlier than in the old style.
The Annunciation in 2025 will be celebrated on March 25, whereas previously the holiday fell on April 7. This change has been a significant event for the religious community in Ukraine, as it brings us closer to the calendar used by the majority of Orthodox churches worldwide.
Despite the change in date, the essence of the holiday remains unchanged. The Annunciation symbolizes the beginning of God's plan for the salvation of humanity, as this moment marks the start of the story of Jesus Christ's birth.
For many Ukrainians, this day is particularly revered as it serves as a reminder of faith, hope, and love. The celebration of the Annunciation unites believers in prayer and spiritual communion, regardless of calendar changes.
Previously, we reported why sewing is not allowed on February 13 and why one must visit the cemetery: omens and prohibitions on Martin.
