The superhero film "Captain America: Brave New World" had a strong opening weekend at the box office but saw a significant drop during its second weekend, reports UNN citing AP.

"Brave New World," as noted by the publication, is "the latest sign that the Marvel machine is not quite what it used to be," remaining at the top of the box office in its second weekend with ticket sales of $28.2 million, according to studio estimates on Sunday. However, after debuting with $100 million over four days and $88 million over three days, this represented a sharp decline of 68%.

While blockbusters often experience significant drops in their second weekends, only two previous MCU films have fallen as quickly: "The Marvels" from 2023, which dropped by 78%, and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" from 2023, which fell by 70%.

The Anthony Mackie-led installment of "Captain America" received criticism from critics, and audiences also rated it poorly with a "B-" on CinemaScore. "Brave New World," which fans hoped would rectify Marvel's fortunes, was largely received as yet another example of how a once-invulnerable brand is struggling to regain its aura of invincibility since "Avengers: Endgame."

Nonetheless, "Brave New World" quickly amassed $289.4 million globally, with international sales nearing $150 million. And as several high-budget offerings are set to hit theaters in the coming weeks, it will face little competition for most of March, the publication notes.

The biggest new release of the weekend was Oz Perkins' "The Monkey," a sequel from the director of his 2024 horror hit "Longlegs." Based on a Stephen King story, "The Monkey" opened with $14.2 million for Neon, marking the second-best debut for an independent distributor. The best remains "Longlegs," which launched with $22.4 million.

Neon had plenty of reasons to celebrate over the weekend. Its main awards contender "Anora" by Sean Baker continues to gain momentum leading up to the next Sunday’s Academy Awards. The favorite for "Best Picture" added wins at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
