When is Mother's Day celebrated in Ukraine? Find out the exact date of this heartfelt holiday.

Mother's Day is one of the most touching holidays, as a mother is the most significant person in everyone's life, always ready to support, forgive, and love unconditionally.

The idea to establish Mother's Day was proposed by American Anna Jarvis in 1908. However, at that time, this day did not hold the positive significance it has today. Anna lost her mother at a young age, which motivated her to create a special day for children to honor the important women in their lives.

Mother's Day in Ukraine: Date

In Ukraine, this family holiday is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday of May. In 2024, this date falls on May 12. The holiday was officially established by a decree from the President of Ukraine on May 10, 1999.

Interestingly, the respect for this holiday has existed in our country for much longer. For instance, the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada began celebrating Mother's Day as early as the early 20th century (in 1928). Later, the initiative was supported across all regions of Ukraine, gaining widespread recognition. During the Soviet era, the holiday was banned and remained so for a long time—until 1999.

On Mother's Day, it is customary not only to give gifts to our mothers but also to visit them, congratulate them with cards and warm words. It is important to remember that even outside of the holiday, children should show their respect and love to their loved ones, helping and supporting them.
