The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, is considering the creation of a special envoy position dedicated solely to addressing the resolution of the war between Russia and Ukraine. He is contemplating appointing Richard Grenell, the former intelligence chief, to this role.
This was reported by Reuters, citing its own sources familiar with the matter. Grenell served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany and acted as the Director of National Intelligence during Trump's presidency from 2017 to 2021.
According to the publication's sources, if Grenell is appointed as the special representative, he will play a crucial role in the efforts of the newly elected U.S. president to end the war. Currently, there is no special envoy, but Trump aims to establish this position.
However, the publication notes that there is still no clarity on this issue—Trump may abandon the idea of creating a special envoy position for the war in Ukraine or choose a different candidate for the role. Moreover, there are no guarantees that Grenell will agree to take the position.
During a Bloomberg roundtable in July, he advocated for the establishment of "autonomous zones" to resolve the conflict. Grenell also stated that he would not support Ukraine's accession to NATO in the near future. He shares this position with many of Trump's allies.
Grenell has a long diplomatic career and extensive knowledge of European affairs. He was the special envoy of the president for peace negotiations in Serbia and Kosovo.
As reported by the Telegraph, NATO plans to enhance its long-term commitments to Ukraine and create a position of "senior civilian representative" for Ukraine issues. This representative's task will be to coordinate support for Ukraine, including military assistance from various countries.
