The first fatal case of the H5N1 bird flu has been reported in the United States. The patient, a 65-year-old man, contracted the virus after coming into contact with a flock of birds in his backyard.

The patient had underlying health conditions and was under medical supervision in Louisiana. This information is reported by CNN, citing data from the Louisiana Department of Health.

Medical professionals checked all individuals who had contact with the patient, but no new cases of infection were found. The patient contracted the D1.1 strain, a variant of the virus that is common among wild and domestic birds.

The American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention assure that the threat of infection remains low for most people, according to CNN. However, scientists have discovered that the virus has changed and adapted to infect human respiratory tracts.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 900 cases of bird flu infection have been recorded worldwide since 2003, with approximately half of the infected individuals having died.

Doctors recommend avoiding contact with sick or dead animals and their droppings. Special caution should be exercised by poultry owners and workers in poultry farms.

As a reminder, "Telegraph" previously reported that the Ministry of Health discussed the threat posed by the metapneumovirus. Simple measures can help minimize the risk of infection.
