Thirteen cases of the dangerous meta-pneumovirus have been reported in Ukraine: find out who is at risk.

Thirteen cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which affects the respiratory tract, have been reported in Ukraine. Experts link the virus's resurgence to the COVID-19 pandemic and the weakened immune response resulting from lockdowns.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) causes illnesses of the upper and lower respiratory tracts, particularly among children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. This was reported by Olga Golubovska, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Bogomolets National Medical University, as conveyed by UNN.

Details

This virus, first identified in 2001, belongs to the Pneumoviridae family and is a close relative of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

According to data from the Center for Public Health, Ukraine has recorded 13 confirmed cases of infection since the beginning of the season, although the actual number may be higher. Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets, and the incubation period lasts from 3 to 6 days. The disease can range from mild to severe and may sometimes lead to the development of fulminant respiratory failure, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Experts believe that the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced changes in the immune landscape, facilitating the activation of new viruses, particularly metapneumovirus. After prolonged lockdowns and restrictions, our tolerance to a wide range of infections has diminished, resulting in outbreaks of diseases such as RSV and HMPV.

To reduce the risk of infection, specialists recommend regular hand washing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, ventilating rooms, and following general hygiene rules. In case of respiratory illness symptoms, especially among at-risk groups, doctors advise testing for HMPV and other respiratory infections, such as influenza and COVID-19.

Particular attention should be given to individuals in high-risk groups, ensuring timely diagnosis of illnesses. Specifically, doctors recommend measuring blood oxygen saturation with a pulse oximeter to promptly identify signs of respiratory failure.
