In Vietnam, authorities detained a former fighter of the Kastus Kalinowski regiment, which is part of the International Legion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Following his arrest, he was handed over to the KGB of Belarus.
According to a report from the Coordination Council of the Belarusian opposition, the individual in question is Vasily Veremeychik ("Patsuk"). The detention occurred on November 13, and he was deported the following day.
"We urge all Belarusians who continue to fight against the regime to exercise extreme caution and carefully choose the countries where they wish to remain. Some states may not provide an adequate level of security and could be vulnerable to the actions of Lukashenko's special services," the statement reads.
According to Nexta, Veremeychik was an officer in the Belarusian army and supported protests against Lukashenko in 2020, after which he was detained on suspicion of arson targeting prosecutor's cars. He was released after 10 days due to lack of evidence.
In 2021, he left for Ukraine out of fear of persecution.
Following the onset of the Russian invasion, Veremeychik became part of what was then the Kalinowski battalion and participated in battles in the Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Luhansk regions. He sustained injuries during combat in the Mykolaiv region.
Ultimately, he had disagreements with the leadership of the Kalinowski regiment, which requested his deportation from the GUR. After that, the former serviceman lived in Lithuania for a time, but was later deemed a threat to national security due to his service in the Belarusian army.
He then decided to stay with acquaintances in Vietnam, where he was subsequently detained. How the authorities became aware of his presence remains unknown.
It is worth noting that news of Veremeychik's deportation became public after he was featured in a Belarusian propaganda film about where the attack on the country was being prepared from.
