Ukrainians who left their homeland due to the war may have significantly different political preferences compared to those who stayed behind. This assumption was made by Alexey Antipovich, head of the Sociological Group "Rating."

According to preliminary data, around 60% of Ukrainian refugees abroad come from the south and east of Ukraine. These regions had shown considerable support for pro-Russian forces before the war and had distinct cultural and linguistic characteristics, particularly the widespread use of the Russian language.

Antipovich noted that no specific studies have been conducted on the political views of Ukrainians abroad yet, but there are important assumptions. Those who left often did not undergo the same level of national consolidation and adaptation to the wartime realities experienced by those who remained in Ukraine.

According to the expert, this may lead to differences in ideological choices:

  • Ukrainians abroad may be less Ukrainized in their choices.
  • Their interest in political events in Ukraine may decrease over time, especially if they plan to stay abroad long-term.

The question of Ukrainian participation in upcoming elections remains open. On one hand, many are interested in events in Ukraine, maintain contact with relatives, and care about the fate of their country. On the other hand, those choosing life abroad may not see a direct impact of Ukrainian politics on their lives, which could potentially reduce their electoral engagement.

If Ukraine introduces online voting, it could create an opportunity for refugees to participate in the elections. However, the question remains: how actively will they engage in the political life of Ukraine if they have chosen a new home?
