On January 6th, Orthodox Christians and Greek Catholics celebrate the Baptism. While immersion in water is a popular tradition, it is not a mandatory part of the celebration, as explained by priest Georgiy Kovalenko from the Orthodox Church of Ukraine during a broadcast on the KIEV24 channel, reports UNN.

Details

"Today is not a holiday for immersion in water, and in fact, there is no obligatory bathing," said the priest.

He added that this might refer to the fact that at one time, on the eve of Epiphany, Christians would bathe en masse, but this certainly did not happen in our lands, rather it occurred somewhere further south.

"I would joke that one should not confuse the adrenaline rush from cold water with the action of God's grace. So, let's say, if someone has the desire, their health permits it, and the area where a person wishes to immerse themselves is safe, then it can be done," Kovalenko noted.

According to him, this is more of an "ornament" to the holiday or a highlight, rather than its essence or main event.

Safety Rules for Immersion

Cardiologist Alexandra Teleguzova, meanwhile, explained how to properly immerse oneself in cold water:

1. Avoid alcohol and smoking. This is not only the right choice from a health perspective but also from a religious one.

2. Prepare for immersion. Do a light warm-up, wash your face with cold water, and rub your face - this will help your body adapt to the water temperature.

3. Immerse yourself only for three to five seconds. It is important to submerge only up to the level of your head. The doctor does not recommend full immersion with the head due to the risk of vascular spasms.

4. After immersion, remove wet clothing. This will help prevent hypothermia and drafts. Thoroughly dry your body and rub it down.

5. Immediately go to a warm room. After the procedure, drink warm tea or uzvar to recover.

Reminder

In Kyiv, safe locations for bathing on Baptism have been designated, and it has been announced where rescuers will be on duty.
