The European Union has grown weary of the ongoing Russian propaganda and disinformation, and is therefore planning to impose sanctions on Russia for its disinformation operations and hybrid attacks against civilized nations. Initial sanctions may target over 10 individuals and three legal entities.
This is reported by Bloomberg, citing a draft sanctions package that journalists have had access to. The sanctions will affect not only employees and divisions of Russian intelligence but also officials and, most importantly, media entrepreneurs serving the Russian regime.
"The restrictions are part of a new sanctions regime approved earlier this year, focusing on disinformation operations and other destabilizing activities sponsored by Russia worldwide," the material states.
In addition to Russia, Belarus will also face sanctions: specifically, up to 20 individuals accused of human rights violations and/or profiting from ties to the regime of self-proclaimed President Alexander Lukashenko. It is noted that sanctions against Minsk could be approved as early as December 16, ahead of the EU leaders' summit and just over a month before the "elections" in Belarus.
Previously, "Telegraph" reported that Russian authorities are attempting to stabilize the ruble, which has fallen to a two-year low and has already surpassed the 110 rubles per dollar mark. The Central Bank of Russia is taking emergency measures, while Putin reassures Russians with meaningless statements. Meanwhile, the head of the Central Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina, recently stated that the Russian economy has already reached a dangerous threshold.
Experts believe that despite Russia's successes on the battlefield, it is losing the economic war at roughly the same rate that Ukraine is losing territory in the east. The Kremlin's oil export revenues have plummeted, the ability to secure loans from abroad has been cut off, and an overheated military economy with a labor shortage can no longer withstand the pressure. Russia may repeat the fate of Kaiser Germany, which achieved victories on the battlefield but ultimately lost the war economically and lost everything.
