The White House believes that the war in Ukraine could come to an end next week. U.S. President Donald Trump is confident in his ability to reach an agreement with Russia that would completely halt the hostilities in Ukraine.
This was stated by White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt during a briefing following the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), reports The Hill. She mentioned that the president and his team are actively working on peace negotiations.
"The president and his team are very focused on continuing negotiations with both sides of this conflict to bring it to a close. The president is confident that we can achieve this within this week," she said, evidently referring to the upcoming week.
According to Levitt, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz is reportedly going to be "working around the clock" on the agreement this weekend. She also recalled the minerals agreement, which Ukraine refuses to sign due to the lack of commitments from the U.S., hinting that pressure on Kyiv to finalize the agreement will intensify.
"When it comes to critical minerals, this is a priority for the president. It is very important to him as it will pay off American taxpayer dollars. Additionally, this will establish a great economic partnership between the United States and the Ukrainian people and aid in Ukraine's recovery after this brutal war," the official stated.
Meanwhile, Trump has shared his vision for ending the conflict through direct negotiations with Putin, but without the involvement of the Ukrainian president. He claims that the presence of the Ukrainian president at negotiations with Russia is allegedly "not that important." U.S. officials indicate that Ukraine will likely have to "taste a sandwich of crap" as the U.S. demands Kyiv cede Crimea, territories occupied by Russia in 2014, as well as the Azov coast seized at the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022.
However, it seems that this "sandwich" will have to be consumed by Trump and Putin. President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly stated that he does not intend to recognize any agreements that the U.S. and Russia attempt to make behind Ukraine's and Europe's back. Moreover, it may appear at first glance that Trump has leverage over Ukraine. In reality, it will be difficult without U.S. support, but Ukraine will stand strong regardless. The European Union is already discussing several aid packages for Ukraine, including a pan-European package worth 700 billion euros, and plans to confiscate frozen Russian assets.
