The newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to his inauguration, which will take place next month in Washington. The invitation was extended to the Chinese leader in early November, immediately following Trump's victory in the presidential election.
In addition to the Chinese leader, other high-ranking officials from various countries around the world may also attend the ceremony. This was reported by CBS News, citing its own sources.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington has not commented on this information. It remains unclear whether the Chinese leader has accepted the invitation.
Trump's team is also considering inviting other world leaders to the Capitol on January 20. In particular, among the potential guests is Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who is currently contemplating attending the ceremony.
"World leaders are lining up to meet with President Trump because they know he will soon be back in power and will restore peace through American strength worldwide," stated Trump's press secretary Caroline Levitt.
At the same time, CBS News notes that according to the U.S. State Department, no foreign leader has attended the inauguration of an American president since 1874. Traditionally, ambassadors and diplomats are invited to such events.
The publication also highlights that Trump's close associates are sharply criticizing the Chinese government. Among the critics are future Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.
Trump himself has repeatedly expressed intentions to raise tariffs on Chinese goods. His administration also set a deadline for the Chinese company ByteDance to sell TikTok by January 19 – the day before the inauguration.
Recall that earlier "Telegraph" reported that after the inauguration, Trump plans to issue more than 25 executive orders. The elected president of the United States aims to radically change the country's future.
