According to writes Reuters, the power outage in Chile on Tuesday, February 25, plunged the capital, Santiago, into darkness and left major copper mines in the north of the country without electricity, impacting global metal markets.

Interior Minister Carolina Tohá stated that the extensive power outage was caused by a failure of a transmission line in the northern part of the country. A cyberattack was ruled out as a potential cause.

Locals noted that this is the largest power outage in Chile in recent years. The situation resulted in street lighting going out in the capital, and sirens from emergency vehicles wailed throughout the city. Santiago's metro, which carries millions of passengers, was closed, and passengers were evacuated from stalled trains. Meanwhile, to maintain order, the Ministry of the Interior is deploying armed forces across the country.
